You can monitor various network parameters quite easily without any third-party software, but an application that makes the process more intuitive and provides you with a graphical representation of the data can be very useful.
pingstats is an open-source program that can help you monitor network ping, jitter and package loss for multiple connections from a modern, intuitive GUI. It displays the information in a real-time graph, but it is fairly difficult to configure.
Once you launch the application, you will be able to see statistics for every active connection. Ping, jitter and package loss are refreshed at 500 ms intervals, and the values are displayed in a graph. You can click on certain sections of the graph to view past values.
Every available connection is monitored by default, but you can choose to remove any of them by editing the pingstats.cfg file. The process isn’t complex, as you only need to find the “enabled = true” line and change true to false.
There are a number of other parameters that can be customized, but this cannot be done from the GUI, which means this application is perhaps not the best choice for inexperienced users.
Of course, you can use the program without editing any advanced settings, but if you do want to change anything you need to access the pingstats.cfg file. It is also worth noting that no documentation is available.
Overall, pingstats is a well-designed application that makes it easy to monitor network ping, jitter and package loss for one or multiple connections. It presents the information in the form of a real-time graph, which looks great, but the program’s advanced settings can only be modified by editing a configuration file manually.
