Portable GWX Stopper

Ever since Microsoft has launched Windows 10, users of previous operating system editions, such as 8 and 7, have been subjected to a continuous flow of upgrade notifications and offers.

Running under the name of GWX, the 'Get Windows 10' app was deployed back in 2015 as a recommended Windows update, being included in the Windows Task Scheduler to periodically display nagging upgrade reminders.

Fortunately for those who find upgrade messages annoying, developers promptly responded to Microsoft's advertising program and created various applications that can block the Windows 10 upgrade and the somewhat tiresome notifications. One of these applications is suggestively called Portable GWX Stopper.

Designed as the no-install edition of GWX Stopper, this application has a very small footprint, providing one of the simplest methods to block the 'Get Windows 10' messages.

Portable GWX Stopper must be launched with administrative privileges. Otherwise, the changes might not be applied. Using it requires absolutely no knowledge, as all users have to do to disable the GWX service is to press a button.

The execution log shows all the steps Portable GWX Stopper has undertaken to completely disable the GWX.exe process. The GWX folder in the 'System32' folder is renamed, and the GWX-related tasks in the Windows scheduler are disabled. There is no button to restore the service, so you will have to rename the aforementioned folder and enable the tasks manually to get the notifications back.

For users who want to stick to older Windows iterations and find the GWX ads impossible to bare, Portable GWX Stopper is a rather good option. Once the GWX process is deactivated, Windows will no longer pester you about upgrading to Windows 10.
