You don’t need a specialized program to check whether a port is open, but such a utility can definitely save you some time, particularly if you have to perform this check regularly.
PortCheck is one of the simplest applications you will ever come across, and it is designed to perform a simple task – verify if a selected port is open on the host machine. It features a minimalistic UI and can be run without going through a setup process.
While PortCheck is clearly not a complex piece of software, its simplicity can be seen as an advantage. You don’t even need to install anything, and the program can be launched from any location.
Your public IP address will be fetched automatically and displayed in the UI. The application will check port 80 by default, but you can replace it with any other port by just clicking the text field.
After specifying which port should be verified, all you have to do is press Enter. You can also customize the connection timeout by pressing the F1 to F4 keys. Their effects are listed on the project’s GitHub page.
If you don’t want to use your public IP, you can change the value by just double-clicking it. However, the program will always fetch your public IP when it is launched.
If you need a straightforward IPv4 TCP port checker, this utility should do the job. It isn’t complex by any means, but it is very easy to use and doesn’t need to be installed on your PC beforehand.
Some additional features would be helpful, such support for IPv6, but this may be introduced in a future version. Nevertheless, the utility can definitely prove useful in its present state.
