Reverse Remote Shell is a cool tool that lets you connect to other machines remotely. It's pretty handy for those times when you need to access another computer from afar.
If you're looking to compile it for Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, or OpenBSD, just type make generic. This should work on most Unix-like systems. But if you're compiling for QNX, go ahead and type make qnx.
Once you've compiled it, type make install, and this will install the rrs binary in /usr/local/bin/
along with the manpage in /usr/local/man/man1/
. If you'd prefer to put those files in /usr/bin/
and /usr/man/man1/
, just use this command: make PREFIX=/usr install.
This release has some exciting updates! We've added support for SSLv3/SSLv2 and CRL. You can now use the -b and -0 options (May 29, 2004). The -S option or --ssl=proto allows you to pick which encryption protocol from OpenSSL you want to use—TLSv1, SSLv3, or SSLv2 are all supported!
The new -b option lets you choose the source port. So when rrs connects out, it'll bind to your specified port instead of using the default one assigned by the kernel. This is super useful for getting around tricky firewall setups.
The -0 option comes into play for setting user IDs if rrs has been chmodded correctly (like 4755/6755). It’s made for giving you a root shell from non-root accounts during pen-tests—basically safe backdoor access.
You can now load CRL files using the -C option. Plus, this option also allows you to include any certificates that you want to trust or not trust. We’ve also included some handy openssl_scripts that help create root CAs and client/server certificates easily. And these scripts can be used beyond just rrs!
