Saeae

There are plenty of ways to monitor the current weather, either through smartphone apps, various websites or desktop applications. Finding the right one is difficult, however, as they often seem to be either too basic or too complex.

Saeae is an Electron-based utility that stands somewhere in the middle: it provides you with quite a lot of data, but it is still very easy to set up and unobtrusive. However, it clearly still needs some work.

Once you’ve installed the application, it should detect your location automatically and provide relevant weather data. However, you can enter the name of any other city around the world to view local information.

The current temperature is shown via the tray icon, and more detailed information is displayed in the right-click menu, such as visibility, humidity, wind speed, pressure and cloud cover.

What’s more, if you double-click the icon, the program displays extensive data about the moon and sun in a separate window.

From the start, Saeae seems to lack polish, as evidenced by the poor font choice for the tray temperature indicator. The weather info is also displayed in a very basic manner, and you cannot exclude certain parameters from the right-click menu.

Also worth noting is the fact that no customization options are available, aside from selecting the city to be monitored.

Lastly, it must be mentioned that Saeae only shows you what the current weather is like in various locations. It relies on openweathermap.org for data, but it does not offer information about the coming days.

Overall, this fairly basic utility can certainly prove useful, as long as you remember that it is still in development and will need to be improved in a number of respects.
