The search engine you use has a lot of bearing on the quality of your results. Google is arguably the most accurate, but even then, some users may find their needs to be met by something like Bing, for example.
Search For Trees’s initiative, whereby it claims that most of its ad revenue goes into planting trees, is not entirely new in the world of search engines, with Ecosia being the long-standing, default choice of those interested in this endeavor.
The search engine comes as a browser extension that can be installed from the Chrome and Firefox stores, respectively. The extension itself does nothing but default your searches to this engine, which is a bit of a shame as it would have been nice to have a breakdown of your contributions upon clicking its icon.
Per the developer, the search results are enhanced by Google, but the results aren’t the same upon comparison. As such, it’s possible for the extension to index multiple engines, but there’s no definitive information as of yet.
As its revenue is seemingly only generated from advertising, whitelisting the Search For Trees domain is recommended to provide greater support. The answers on this are a bit inconclusive, however, as a more comprehensive FAQ section is still in the works by the developer.
Users can check their impact on the environment by clicking the little tree icon in the top right corner of the search engine, where you’ll find out how many trees were planted thanks to your searches, as well as some revenue estimates.
Search For Trees is a search engine to try out if you’re looking for something new. The only way to discover if it’s for you is trying it out: you may find its results to be good enough for your needs, in which case, the tree planting endeavor is a very nice bonus.
