Geared toward experienced users, SNMP Explorer is a networking utility designed to help you find and monitor SNMP agent systems in your local network. It includes a navigator for the identified MIB (Management Information Base), a built-in web browser, and trap logging, among other features.
Before proceeding any further, you should know that this is a very old program that hasn't been updated for a long time, so it may not work on your modern computer.
Make sure to apply administrative right when attempting to launch it, though. SNMP Explorer is wrapped in a classical-looking interface which consists of a large window with a neatly organized structure.
You can either indicate an computer's host name or IP address, or ask the application to automatically detect all hosts in a given range. It populates the main window with IP addresses soon after this, along with the PC names and descriptions. They can be grouped together in different communities.
Trap logging is automatically enabled when selecting one of the hosts. Once SNMP Explorer has computed all the necessary information, it reveals the ID, name, value and value type of all identified objects, which are structured in hierarchical form.
It's possible to send a MIB Walk signal to the SNMP tree, stop this procedure anytime, send a trap by indicating the system IP address, community, enterprise OID and trap number, as well as study or disable traps logging.
SNMP Explorer is capable of obtaining a full MIB list, along with MIB definitions. As previously mentioned, it's also equipped with a built-in web browser which, although it looks rudimentary now, it still works.
As far as program settings are concerned, you can modify the default port numbers for SNMP Get/Set, trap sending and trap listening, together with the timeout (in seconds).
We haven't encountered any stability issues in our tests, since the program didn't hang, crash or prompt errors. It carried out scan jobs quickly while remaining light on system resources consumption. Too bad that it hasn't been updated for a long time.
