The SSD (Solid State Drive) is known for its superior reading and writing speeds when compared to a classic HDD. However, the SSDs are also more expensive than their counterparts, meaning that you’d have to be more careful when it comes to their life span. If you feel the need to closely monitor your SSD’s activity, Solid State Doctor might be the right solution.

When you open the app, you should already see your identified drives. Upon selecting a drive, (in case you have more than one) a short information list will be displayed. Drive size, serial number, model, firmware version and supported features are going to be on that list.

Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology is a feature that monitors a drive’s status in order to warn about reliability or critical failures. If your drive supports this technology, the Feature entry from drive info will list it as S.M.A.R.T.

Also, there is a separate tab dedicated to this feature and it can be identified by the icon that resembles the name. From there, you can check the drive’s attributes or run diagnostics. The diagnostics are represented by the pocket watch icons and can provide you with quick or full diagnostics, depending on what are you looking for.

If the already listed features were oriented towards offering information about the drives and nothing else, the Drive Tools section is another game. These functions are there to help you manage and prolong the drive’s life.

For example, we have the Overprovision Tool, which reserves some space from your drive in order to facilitate its management, similar to the Windows 10 reserved space. Next, Disk Clone Tool we have a function that can be used to back up your contents, by cloning the device.

If you want to get rid of unused data blocks, you can schedule the TRIM to execute constant sweeps over your drive.

In conclusion, SSD is a straightforward application that can help you extend your SSD life by constantly keeping it monitored and by providing you efficient means to clean it and save stored data.
