Mobile simulators are often the preferred alternative by developers, since it enables them to assess the capabilities of their apps in a virtual environment, without having to use their own handheld device and risking to damage it.

Such a tool is Sony Ericsson PhoneGap Simulator, an application that relies on the power of the Android and the Symbian SDKs in order to test the performance of a web-based app. All the controls are neatly comprised in the Debug Panel, where you can browse for the HTML or JavaScript file you want to load.

The debug console enables you to analyze the JavaScript, CSS or HTML code and detect possible errors and bugs. The built-in editor features syntax highlighting and enables you to write code, correct identified errors and run CSS content.

The application provides two skin types, one for Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and one for Sony Ericsson Satio phones, enabling you to load them from the Debug Panel also.

You can use the accelerometer console to generate a simulated 3D environment and test the way the phone behaves when you rotate it. The application also features sound and vibration simulation and integrates a GPS tracker that uses the Google Maps API to simulate the identification of geographical locations.

Sony Ericsson PhoneGap Simulator is mostly intended for app developers with solid experience in JavaScript, CSS and HTML. It is not designed to provide a realistic experience when it comes to phone handling, but it enables them to take a look at how their webpages look like when displayed by a browser running on a Sony Ericsson phone.
