SourceSafe for Unix
SourceSafe for Unix (or SSU for short) is a handy tool that lets you access local and remote Source Safe/VSS repositories using command lines over TCP. Pretty cool, right?
Requirements
So, before you dive in, here’s what you need to know:
- The system has two main parts: a command-line Unix client and a Windows-based server. This server runs on any machine that has access to your repositories. One Windows machine can manage loads of repositories and clients without breaking a sweat!
- The Unix client, called “ss,” only needs Perl version 5.4 or higher and network TCP port 5901 to connect to the server.
- For the Windows server known as “ssserv,” you’ll need Perl version 5.6 or higher. But just a heads-up – it's been tested best with ActivePerl_ 5.8 because version 5.6 had some stability hiccups.
- This server runs as its own process unless you set it up with some service helpers (but we won't go into that here).
- And don’t forget! You need to have the SourceSafe command-line client installed on your local machine, which usually comes with the SourceSafe software itself.

This update brings some exciting changes:
- The performance for the “update” and “diff” commands got a nice boost thanks to a local ssserv hash cache.
- Plus, there are new commands: “help” and “monitor.” These should make your work even smoother!
