The best method of being certain of an aspect, regardless of domain, is testing. When it comes to hardware components, there are various graphic card models, CPUs and memory units, each with custom specifications. In order to determine an overall quality of a hardware component, so-called benchmarking utilities are used. Speed Test is one of them, promising to let you know how well your computer performs under pressure.
Mostly used by video game enthusiasts, benchmarking utilities put high amount of pressure on your system, and based on standard specifications give your components a score so you can compare with other products online.
However, if you've ever used such tools you notice right from the start that this one is different, and not necessarily in a good way. There are four main test cases your computer is taken through in order to determine CPU speed, frames per second, GPU test, as well the total number of instances your machine can handle at a time.
Once you launch the application a small window informs you of what is about to happen. Depending on your configuration, it can take some time until the main progress bar fully loads up, in this time the number of frames per second, as well as CPU usage being displayed.
All four tests run one after another, and except for the GPU test, none other displays anything except the loading bar. After each test, result is saved to an individual text file you can find in the default directory.
Taking a look might leave you impressed, but the application does not let you compare results with any other products, nor does it recommend a website where you can do so according to methods used to determine your overall score. This leaves you wondering whether or not the application got everything right.
Taking everything into consideration, we can say that Speed Test is far from being a pro of its kind, with the overall design feeling a little rough around the edges and mostly creating confusion. Test cases don't take a considerable amount of time to finish, but trusting results and actually running a powerful game might leave you disappointed if your rig is not up to date.
