Albeit, at first sight, a simple to solve puzzle, Stix is more than an amusing little game based on a stick structure you need to navigate until you obliterate it from the playing area.
While playing Stix, you have to move around the puzzle area, from one segment to another, through their connections. It is important to mention that each connection comes with a maximum health and every time you cross it, its health will decrease by one point.
Once a stick connections' health count goes down to zero, the stick will disappear from the screen. Eventually, if you plan correctly and smart, you can remove all sticks from the puzzle and advance to the next level.
Stix comes with three playing modes: Basic, Aggressive and Master. In Basic mode, all the puzzle's levels are abandoned and the only one roaming the maze is you. While playing in Basic mode, you have seven lives, but, in exchange, you can plan your route around the levels without any interruptions.
In Aggressive mode, while going through the game's levels, you are hunted down by alien patrols. This means that you have to make split second decisions to elude the aliens' attacks and also making sure you carefully plan your end game moves.
Luckily, you have infinite lives to do it, but this doesn't mean the game gets any easier; it's just more frantic and a lot crazier, with your multi-tasking abilities being drawn out thinner each level.
Finally, if you manage to solve Stix's puzzles in the first two modes, you can switch to Master, where you have to solve the same 15 levels, being followed around each level by aliens, before your seven lives run out.
As a result, for gamers who are not die-hard fans of puzzles, Stix might look like an enigma encapsulated in a riddle and carefully boxed in a brainteaser.
Although it comes with quite a steep learning curve, Stix is an enjoyable and quite relaxing puzzle game in Basic mode, once you understand the mechanics behind how the sticks are removed from the playing area.
Moreover, Stix also comes with enough appeal for gamers who also need to feel a little pressure, as the game's Aggressive and Master modes pack quite a lot of it.
