Subsurface is an awesome open-source project that gives divers a cool way to log their dives. Whether you're using air, TriMix, or Nitrox, this diving log application can handle it all—both single-tank and multi-tank dives!
This software was created by Linus Torvalds, the guy behind the Linux kernel. He got tired of not having good dive log options for Linux users, so he built Subsurface. Isn't that amazing?
Subsurface is designed from scratch to let you keep track of everything related to your dives. You can log details like exposure times and weights used, dive buddies, and even dive masters! Plus, you can rate your dives and jot down personal notes.
One of the coolest features is its built-in GPS support! This means you can track your dive locations easily. When you're adding a new dive note, you can fill in details like start time, air temperature, location coordinates, who your divemaster was, your buddy's name, what suit you wore, how you rated the dive, visibility conditions, tags, and any other notes.
You can also add detailed info about your gear like cylinder types and sizes. You'll find useful stats displayed on the Stats tab too—things like depth, duration of the dive, water temperature changes over time (SAC), and total dive time.
The Dive Info tab gives you a quick summary of each selected dive. You'll see stuff like the date of the dive, gases used (and how much), max and average depths reached during each trip—plus more details about pressure and temperature conditions.
If you're curious about what makes this app tick: it uses the Qt GUI toolkit for its interface. So whether you're on Linux, Windows or Mac OS X—you're good to go!
All in all, Subsurface is a fantastic option for logging dives on Windows and Mac OS X platforms. It really shines in the open-source community where quality diving apps are hard to find!
