Even if you understand the language, certain movies can be difficult to follow without subtitles, and few things are more annoying than captions that are not synchronized with the video.
Subtitle Modifier us a small, Java-based utility that aims to make it easier for users to adjust the timing of captions in subtitle files. It is certainly simple to use, but it needs some improvements.
If there is one thing this application has going for it, it is its simple, novice-friendly design. The UI is minimalistic, with only a couple of buttons that enable you to make the necessary modifications.
Once you’ve opened a subtitle file, which, sadly, cannot be done with drag and drop, you only need to specify how many seconds the captions should be advanced or delayed.
Of course, subtitles are rarely off sync by exactly one, two or three seconds, and this application does not allow you to change timings by fractions of a second.
Getting the synchronization just right will be very difficult with this utility, and you may have to make do with subtitles that are close, but not quite perfect.
While it clearly needs a few improvements, Subtitle Modifier has the advantage of being fully portable. However, you need to make sure Java is installed on your PC before running it.
The program consists of a single small file, so it should be very easy to carry it around with you wherever you go. What’s more, it leaves no traces behind after you use it.
Subtitle Modifier is a handy tool for adjusting subtitle timings, but it needs to be improved in certain respects. Most importantly, users should have the option of adjusting times by less than a second.
