There is a large variety of online locations specialized in streaming of videos for education, entertainment, and other domains. Chances are you want to use bits of info in your projects, but not all sources allow content to be downloaded. This is where Tarsier Prototype comes in handy, letting you grab either the video or audio layer from popular online multimedia sources.

With little time spent installing it you get the chance to check out the set of features before you realize. The visual design is minimalistic, letting individuals of all levels of experience quickly get the hang of things. A large area is used to enlist all content you’re about to download, while a dedicated URL field processes source links.

There’s not really a list of supported sources so you can try your luck with multiple popular websites, including YouTube. Links aren’t automatically grabbed from the clipboard which means you need to manually paste, and add entries. Multiple items can be added to the list before the download session begins.

All links you add appear in a table with info headers for file name and URL. You can arrange them, which dictates the order in which these are processed. There’s the possibility to download either the video layer, or to convert to MP3 when done, but this affects all links in the process. It’s also a good idea to provide a custom download location.

Download speed mostly depends on your connection type and size of the target file. Chances are the process ends in an error, with no prompt to provide more details. There are no quality options to configure for videos. It would have also been useful to see a built-in shutdown scheduler to have the PC automatically power off when done.

Bottom line is that there’s little need to keep large videos or audio files on your computer when these can easily be accessed online. However, having to deal with them online requires an application like Tarsier Prototype, but this one in particular has a long road ahead before it can fully meet all demands.
