Teslagrad is a 2.5D adventure platformer game in which you have to take on the role of a unnamed young boy and find your way through a series of puzzles within a mysterious castle.
If anything, the game can really stand on its own based on its tasteful graphics, with stylish colors and beautifully rendered environments, elements and electricity effects. The sound effects are top notch for a game of this sort, with engaging soundtracks ranging from action-like beats all the way to calm ambient tones. One thing is clear, this is a well-polished game, with a lot of work behind it and a very impressive attention to detail.
As far as the actual game physics are concerned, you will soon feel that Teslagrad does not revolutionize the genre in any way, but offers an old-school gameplay. The game is based on the simple principle of positive and negative charges or attraction and repulsion if you want, with the ultimate goal being to collect all hidden 36 capsules or scrolls.
Most of the puzzles you will encounter will not represent the hardest challenges of your life, but, on some occasions, you will have to struggle a bit to execute the solution. One expression that would best describe the experience is “trial and error”.
While there is no actual fighting in Teslagrad and everything has the potential to kill you with only one hit, this doesn’t make the game any less engaging, as you will need to creatively use the forces of electricity to achieve your aims.
The presentation of the story, while a bit vague, is quite interesting, as the game features no dialog, no voice acting, no speech bubbles, with the story being partially implied visually and partly left at your imagination’s will.
While this kind of story telling is interesting, you will have to be quite patient to find out what really happend, like, for example, what happened to your father or what happened between the blue Teslamancers and the invading red forces.
As an ending note, Teslagrad combines elements of visual storytelling, a electricity based interactive gameplay, a wonderfully rendered world and, not to forget, a tasteful soundtrack, to form one of the most interesting and stylish platformer games to this day.
