The Mooseman is a fun adventure game with stunning graphics and a haunting soundtrack that both help to create a gripping and sometimes chilling atmosphere.
The main character, from whom the game takes its title, is a mystical shaman inspired by Russian mythology that can see and interact with the spirit world. You will have to guide him through a beautifully designed 2D landscape, avoiding dangers along the way by moving between the human and spirit realms.
For an indie game produced with a supposedly limited budget, The Mooseman does not disappoint from a visual standpoint, with a unique style that fits very well with the game’s overall theme. The constant transitions between the two worlds add more variety, letting you see spirits that inhabit living creatures and other objects whose origin and significance is mysterious and a little bit unsettling.
The game’s soundtrack is equally fitting, creating suspense when it is needed and providing a relaxing backdrop the rest of the time.
The game world is a gloomy, desolate place, sparsely populated by creatures that are usually not too friendly and the various obstacles you would expect to find in a platformer game. To fight off potential threats and solve puzzles you have only two tools at your disposal: you can (slowly) move out of the way or switch between the human and spirit world.
You can also collect certain artefacts along the way and check the state of your collection in the in-game menu, although it is not clear at the moment if they serve an additional purpose or are included simply to provide you with a better insight into the game’s lore.
Your game is automatically saved after passing various checkpoints, so you do not have to worry about doing everything all over again when you make a mistake.
Sadly, in this early version of the game only a single level is available and, unfortunately, it is not going to keep you entertained for very long. However, more of them are in the works, and it will be exciting to see what the developers can come up with next.
If you are a fan of adventure games that create a gripping atmosphere and include a fair bit of platforming and puzzles, you should give The Mooseman a try. It is relatively short in its current state, but it shows a lot of promise for the future.
