There are many ways Twitch can notify you when a streamer goes online, especially if you use the official desktop and mobile apps. However, if you want a simpler way to check whether or not a channel is live, a third-party utility may be the solution.
Twitch Notify is a very small, open-source program that runs in the system tray and alerts you when one of your favorite streamers goes live. It also lets you keep track of which channels are online.
To get started, you first need to open the TwitchNotify.txt document in the program folder and add the channel names of all the streamers you wish to follow. A number of channels are already in there, but you’re probably going to want to replace them.
While this method of adding Twitch users is quite rudimentary, it is also very novice-friendly. What’s more, you can add more channels even while the application is running without having to restart it.
Once you’ve set everything up, you can just leave the application running in the system tray. When one of your followed channels goes online, a notification will be displayed in the tray area.
When you click on a channel name, it will be opened in your default web browser. If the user is online, you also have the option of opening the stream using Livestreamer or mpv and youtube-dl. These programs will need to be copied to the application’s directory.
There are no other features to be mentioned, such as integration with your Twitch account in order to make it easier to add your followed channels to the user list.
Nevertheless, Twitch Notify can prove to be invaluable for users who only need a basic, no-nonsense utility that alerts then when certain Twitch streamers go live.
