How to Use Typography Keyboard Layout


With this layout, you can use the right Alt key to type characters that aren't usually available. For example, if you press Alt + < and Alt + >, you'll get the quotation marks. It's a handy shortcut!

If you want to access even more characters, just add the Shift key! For instance, pressing Alt + Shift + C gives you the cent sign (¢). It’s that simple!



Setting Up Typography Keyboard Layout

  1. First, copy both files from the archive into /Library/Keyboard Layouts.

  2. Next, go to System Preferences and open International, then Input Menu.

  3. Finally, enable the layout called English — Ilya Birman Typography.



Troubleshooting Tips


You might notice that your Mac won’t let you turn off the default US keyboard layout. Don’t worry; it won’t cause any issues! The new layout kicks in as soon as you restart any app.
