UbuTricks is a handy little script made in Bash that helps you get the latest and greatest games and graphical apps on your Ubuntu Linux system. And guess what? It works on other Ubuntu versions too!
With UbuTricks, you can easily install popular software like Calibre, Fotoxx, Geary, GIMP, Google Earth, HexChat, jAlbum, Kdenlive, LibreOffice, PCManFM, Qmmp, QuiteRSS, QupZilla, Shutter, SMPlayer, Ubuntu Tweak, XBMC (Kodi), PlayOnLinux and so many others. There’s a ton of options!
If you’re a gamer, you’re in luck! You can install cool games like 0 A.D., Battle for Wesnoth, Transmageddon, Unvanquished and VCMI (Heroes III Engine) through UbuTricks. Plus, it even lets you set up desktop environments like Cinnamon and LXQt.
This program comes as a .sh file (that’s a shell script for those who might not know). You can run it from the command line using “sh ubutricks.sh” or just make it executable and double-click it right from your Home folder or desktop. Super easy! Just pick an app or game and click OK to start the installation.
The first time you fire up UbuTricks, you'll see a welcome screen that shows you how everything works. Installing an app or game is straightforward with three methods available: PPA (Personal Package Archive), DEB file or source tarball. The best part? The apps and games will automatically download and install for you!
This tool supports several versions of Ubuntu Linux but defaults to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) if nothing else is specified. Just keep in mind that you'll need the gksu package installed on your system for it to work properly. It also relies on Zenity being installed.
