Among the testing tools required for checking the functionality of network programs, firewalls or intrusion detection systems a UDP echo server comes in handy as the utility can show if the client at the other end receives the message.
UDP Echo is a simple server that may fit the bill perfectly as it does not require installation and there are no options to tinker with in order to set it up. Just double-click the executable and the application launches.
The interface does not include anything unnecessary, just the functions and options needed by the user to calibrate the connection with the client. Before starting the server you can define a port for exchanging the messages (datagram), which should be the same on the client side.
Unfortunately, the developer does not include a client for the server in UDP Echo and a third party tool is necessary to fulfil this function.
As soon as the same port details are set on the client side, the server is ready to receive the datagram. Besides the actual message, UDP Echo server also shows the IP address of the sender and repeats the signal for as long as it is received.
UDP (User Datagram Protocol) is a TCP/IP standard intended for carrying data between TCP/IP hosts. However, it does not guarantee the delivery of the datagrams and neither does it check the sequencing.
UDP echo is a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) type of application, which means that there are no hidden functions and everything is available in the initial screen. It manages to fulfil its purpose although we did not notice a message being returned to the client.
