Unmac is a handy tool for your Mac! When you copy files to different storage devices, like memory sticks or SD cards, your Mac adds some extra files. These are called auxiliary files, and they hold bits of information about the original files. But here's the catch: if you're not using another Mac to read those files, they just clutter up your drive.
So, what are these extra files all about? Well, when you zip files on a Mac, it creates special folders like __MACOSX. If you ever unzip a file on Windows that was zipped on a Mac, you'll probably notice these extra folders. They're there to help other Macs understand the metadata and keep everything organized with tools like Spotlight.
If you don't need those extra features or if you're just using your files on non-Mac systems, these auxiliary files can be pretty annoying. They can fill up space and make your directories look messy.
This is where Unmac comes in! It’s a command-line utility that lets you quickly remove those pesky extra files. You can get rid of them in no time!
Ready to install Unmac? Great! First, open up your Terminal window. Next, navigate to the folder where the Unmac Ruby gem is stored. Here’s the command you’ll need to run:
sudo gem install unmac-0.7.gem
You’ll need admin privileges for this step. Once that's done, you'll be all set!
