Valencia is a cool open-source plugin for Gedit, and it comes from the folks who made the fantastic Geary email client. It’s designed to turn Gedit into a handy IDE (Integrated Development Environment) specifically for Vala programming.

Easy to Use

One of the best parts? Valencia is super easy to set up. You don't need any tricky configurations. Just open a .vala file, and you’ll see its symbols right away! Valencia automatically picks a specific version of Vala, so just keep both projects updated for the best experience.

Jump Right In!

If you’re coding in Vala, this plugin has your back. It lets you jump straight to definitions of methods, classes, variables, and fields. Plus, you can build your project right inside Gedit and view the build output in a pane within the editor.

Valencia also makes debugging easier! If there’s a build error, just double-click on it to go directly to that line in your code. You can even use the Run command to execute your application smoothly. And don’t worry about getting stuck; it offers auto-completion suggestions and tooltips that show method prototypes as you type.

How to Install Valencia

Ready to get started? To install Valencia, head over to the downloads section above and grab the source archive. Extract it somewhere in your Home directory. Then run make followed by make install. Just remember—don’t run “make install” as root!

Enable Valencia in Gedit

The installation will place Valencia in your ~/.gnome2/gedit directory. To enable it in Gedit, go to Edit -> Preferences, then click on the Plugins tab. Find Valencia on the list and check its box before closing out of that dialog box. And voilà! You’re all set to start coding in Vala with Valencia!
