Electricity can be produced from various sources and distributed so we can fully enjoy the benefits of modern day living. Before actually reaching your device, the current undergoes massive transformations and power regulations so you don't fry components. Engineers have the possibility to use specialized applications like Xformer Designer in order to calculate transformer parameters with a few mouse clicks.
One of the main advantages of the application is portability. This makes it possible to keep it stored on a USB Flash drive and take advantage of its features on any computer you plug the device in. It comes in handy for quick calculus, with the target PC's health status remaining intact.
All you get to work with is cleverly organized in a compact window. There's nothing special about visuals, with the main window split into two panes, one to insert variables, while the other displays the result of their processing. Other details can be found, such as measurement unit types and used to show different results.
Your effort consists of filling in two fields for core area and VA, after which four more become available for voltage, frequency, flux and turns. All of them need to be filled, with the possibility to get an idea of material references for mild and silicon steel, as well as mu-metal.
Flexibility isn't the application's strongest point, with the set of features ending here. In case you have a text editor at hand, the only way to put generated values to good use is to manually copy them. It would have been useful to see at least a visual representation or a few more details. What's more, when changes are made, you need to hit the “calculate” button again, because automatic refresh is not implemented.
Taking everything into consideration, we can say that Xformer Designer is a simple and straightforward utility with the sole purpose of letting you know specific values needed to build an electrical transformer. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but engineers are sure to enjoy this little, portable utility.
