XMMS2

So, you might have heard about XMMS (xmms.org), right? It’s that super popular Winamp clone for Linux and UNIX-like systems. Well, let me tell you about its cool successor: XMMS2.

What is XMMS2?

XMMS2 kicked off in late 2002, thanks to one of the original creators of XMMS, Peter Alm. He wanted to create a "kick-ass music player"—and guess what? He did! It’s like the next-gen version of XMMS.

An Audio Player, Not a Multimedia One

Now, here’s something important to know: XMMS2 is all about audio. If you're looking for a player that does videos too, this isn't it. While it has an awesome modular framework and plugin architecture for handling audio processing and output, it doesn’t support video playback at all.

The Client-Server Design

The way XMMS2 is designed makes it special. It uses a client-server setup where the daemon operates independently from any graphics output. This pretty much means direct video output isn’t going to happen here.

Getting Started with XMMS2 on Mac

If you're on Mac and want to give XMMS2 a shot, first you'll need to download and install MacPorts. Then you can install sqlite using MacPorts by typing this command in your terminal: port install sqlite3. Once that’s done, you’re all set to compile XMMS2. Just run:

".\/waf configure && .\/waf && sudo .\/waf install"

This should be done in the terminal after changing your working directory to the unpacked folder with the source files.
