Now, let’s talk about something a bit more technical: the X Window System, also known as X11 or just X. This system is super important when it comes to graphical displays on computers. It helps create windows on screens using the X display protocol.
The main job of X is to provide a toolkit and protocol for building graphical user interfaces (GUIs) on Unix-like systems and OpenVMS. You’ll find that it’s been adapted for many other operating systems too!
X gives us the basic building blocks for creating graphical environments. This includes things like drawing windows, moving them around, and using your mouse or keyboard to interact with them. What’s cool is that X doesn’t decide how these interfaces should look—individual programs do! So, you’ll see a lot of variety in how different applications present their user interface.
Another neat fact: X isn’t built into the operating system itself. Instead, it works as an additional layer on top of the operating system kernel. This setup allows for flexibility and creativity in design.
One of the most interesting features of X is its network transparency. This means that the computer running an application (the client) can be different from where you're viewing it (the display server). So, if you’re working over a network, this flexibility really comes in handy!
The development of X started back at MIT back in 1984. The version we currently use, X11, was released in September 1987. The project is now led by the X.Org Foundation, which provides the reference implementation known as X.org Server. Best part? It’s available as free software under the MIT License!
