Clumsy is a nifty little app that helps you check for bugs or see how well a program, service, or feature works when the internet isn't cooperating. Even though we've all got high-speed broadband these days, sometimes our network can be pretty unreliable.
This tool has a super easy-to-use interface that lets you pick the types of network packages you want to track. You can choose from inbound or outbound traffic, TCP or UDP settings, and even select specific IP addresses or socket ports. Once you're ready, just hit start, and Clumsy will capture only the packets you've selected while ignoring the rest.
A cool feature of Clumsy is that it allows you to create bad network conditions on purpose! You can hold packets back for a bit, randomly discard some, block traffic for a set time, rearrange packets, tweak parts of their content, or even send cloned packets right after the originals. Plus, you can keep your app running and simulate poor network conditions by starting and stopping Clumsy as needed.
It's good to keep in mind that there are some limitations with this tool. The developer advises checking out these limitations before diving in. For example, Clumsy can't capture or reinject lookback inbound packets and might not work perfectly all the time. Sometimes loopback packets get captured twice too! Also, there's no filter based on processes.
While Clumsy isn't the ultimate solution for testing apps under tough network conditions, it's a quick and easy way to do some initial tests—especially if you're busy and need something straightforward.
