GFS-view is a lightweight software that lets you create detailed weather forecast maps using data from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, or NCEP. It’s super handy if you’re into weather tracking!
Before you jump in, make sure you have the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package 2015 on your computer. The installation process is pretty simple and wizard-based, so even if you're not a tech whiz, you'll be fine!
Once you've got it installed, just launch the program and start by downloading GRIB2 data. You’ll see an “Open by date” button; click that! From there, choose your start and end dates using the two calendar panels. You can also pick specific GRIB codes or check out all available codes and levels.
Next up, select your starting and ending run times in their designated sections. Don’t forget to pick your area of interest from the Places list! And remember to set the area size in decimal degrees to get accurate results.
After that, hit the “Open” button to get data from NCEP (NOMADS) hosts. Once everything downloads, you're good to go! Start exploring all the cool features this app has.
You can load shape-file maps and overlay them onto your current forecast map. Zoom in and scroll around for more details. Plus, you can customize how your map looks by choosing different color tables and font sizes!
This app allows you to generate maps for specific periods based on GRIB codes depending on level and height.
Overall, GFS-view is a nifty tool for anyone interested in making weather forecast maps. It has a minimalist design that's easy to navigate but might take some getting used to if you're new to this type of software.
