IPCOMServer is a budget-friendly and simple solution for controlling RS-232 devices. You won’t need to spend a ton on fancy router products like the Cisco 2511 Terminal server. How cool is that?
This handy tool acts like a Telnet server, letting users connect directly to their chosen COM port. Whether you're using a Telnet program or have your own custom Telnet Client, IPCOMServer has got you covered.
A Telnet program gives you a text-based interface to interact with your attached RS-232 device. The main reason IPCOMServer was created is to let users manage custom-built electronic gear or access remote control testing tools like the TTC Fireberd 4000 or Protocol Analyzers.
Think of IPCOMServer as a bridge between a TCP/IP port (or socket) and your PC's Serial/COM port. When you connect with a Telnet program or client, it links up directly with the serial port you've set up in IPCOMServer.
Any strings of data or commands generated by the client travel across the TCP/IP network to the host computer. Once there, these incoming commands are sent right over to the serial port.
The device connected to the host will respond to those commands by sending replies back, which then get relayed back to you at the client end. It's all about keeping that communication flowing!
You can use these replies in different ways—whether that's displaying them in text form or updating a graphical user interface (GUI). Want more details? Check out the application notes.
