Metastables is a handy program that helps you work with metastable ions. All you need is the mean mass value of a metastable ion (M*) and either an exact or estimated value for the molecular ion (M+). The cool thing is it will give you one or more combinations of ion pairs that fit this equation:
M* = (M2 * M2) / M1,
In this formula, M1 and M2 are whole numbers, and there’s a little wiggle room with an error tolerance of (+/-) 0.1 dalton.
So, you might be wondering what metastable ions actually are. Well, they come from fragmentation after acceleration but before they hit the magnetic sector. The spot where their diffuse peaks show up in the mass spectrum is defined by that neat equation we mentioned.
If you need to do more with your data, no worries! You can export your results to a TAB-delimited file. This makes it super easy to import into Excel for further processing and analysis.
If you're ready to dive into some serious data work, check out Metastables. It's user-friendly and has all the features you need!
