What is Modem Log Analyser?

Modem Log Analyser

Modem Log Analyser is a handy little tool that helps you take a look at your Windows Dialup modem log file. It breaks down your online time, costs, uploads, downloads, and even how well your modem is working. Basically, it makes sense of all the confusing stuff in the modem log so you can see what's going on with your Internet usage.

Setting Up Your Modem Log File

Before you dive into using the Modem Log Analyser, there's one important step: you need to create a modem log file! Just a heads up—this tool works only if you're connecting to the Internet using standard Windows Dialup. If you're using something else, it might not work since other programs have their own logging features.

How to Create Your Log File

Here’s how to set up that log file:

  1. You need to turn on the log file recording. First off, find a file named “Scripter.exe” (or just “Scripter” if you can't see file extensions) in your “Windows” directory. If it’s playing hide and seek, just use the Windows “Find” tool from the start menu.

  2. Run Scripter. Click on “Properties,” then go to “Configure,” hit the “Connection” tab, and finally “Advanced.” Make sure to check the box that says “Record a log file.” If it was already checked... well, sorry for wasting half an hour! Click all those "OK" buttons to exit.

  3. No peeking yet! You’ll need to connect to the Internet first before logging starts. And when it's time to disconnect, remember—not to just switch off your modem like that! Always click “Disconnect” so everything logs properly.

  4. Once you've done that, head over to your Windows directory (like C:\Windows), and there should be a shiny new log named “ModemLog.txt.” If it’s not there yet, try searching again with that Find program. Open it up with NotePad or any basic text editor and see for yourself how confusing it looks without MLA's help!

  5. Last step—let MLA work its magic! But wait! Don’t forget about filling out the initialization file (mla.ini). This has to be in the same folder as MLA itself. Open this file in your text editor and double-check all those details are correct.

Ready for Analysis!

Now you're all set! With everything ready and logged properly, you can let Modem Log Analyser do its job!
