Route Sentry is designed specifically for folks in South Africa who want to use two different ADSL accounts on the same computer at the same time. Sounds cool, right?
A lot of people shy away from this setup because they think it’s too much hassle. You know, having to manually adjust those IP routing tables every time you connect? That’s a pain! But with Route Sentry, it’s super easy.
This nifty software keeps an eye on both connections and directs South African traffic through your local account while sending everything else out through your international account. Talk about smart!
If one of your connections drops—which can happen at least once a day—Route Sentry will automatically reconnect and keep everything running smoothly. Even if the IP addresses change after reconnecting, it still manages to keep traffic flowing through the right channels.
You don’t even have to hook your modem directly to your PC! Route Sentry works great even if your modem is plugged into a hub or switch. This means you can share that modem among different PCs on your network for simultaneous PPPOE connections.
Quick tip: Make sure you set the number of lines (WAN endpoints) in the PPPOE protocol properties to 2 or more. If you don’t, you’ll get a busy error when trying to connect the second account. And when you first test the connection, don’t forget to check ‘save password’ so Route Sentry can auto-connect for you later!
One thing to keep in mind: If you've used your ADSL modem in router mode before, then your PC was protected from internet threats since the modem acted like a firewall. But if you're using it in “modem/bridge” mode now, your PC connects directly to the internet when dialing up again. So using a software firewall—like the built-in one on Windows XP—is highly recommended!
Just remember: one account should be for local access only and the other is meant for international traffic.
