The Internet is not the only place for malicious content to spread to computers, and these can also be contacted through file transfer via removable storage devices. In this regard, A.H. Secure USB comes with a set of tools to help protect data transfers to and from USB flash drive, and scan in order to detect potential malicious files.
One of the application’s main advantages is that you don’t have to go through a setup process, and can easily fit on a thumb drive to carry it around. However, it needs to be launched with administrator privileges so it can properly apply its features. What’s more, the computer you use it on needs to be fitted with .NET Framework for everything to work as intended.
The application comes with two modes of operation to add an extra layer of security to data transfer sessions. On the one hand, there’s the write protector. When triggered, it brings up a small window which makes it easy to either completely disable visibility of USB ports, or simply remove writing rights so data is only readable.
Unfortunately, the application activates this function for all USB ports, and doesn’t give you the chance to select a particular flash drive. What’s more, all drives must be ejected before any functions can be applied, and get activated once a drive is plugged into an available port. Reactivating all privileges is done in a similar manner.
On the other hand, there’s a built-in scanner tool which attempts to detect files which can potentially harm your computer. Detection ratio leaves much to be desired, but has a high chance of detecting troublesome Autorun.ini files and such. You can choose to manually remove detected threats.
In conclusion, A.H. Secure USB is a lightweight tool which mostly comes in handy from preventing data theft, or loss from thumb drives. Although the operation is a little ambiguous and doesn’t provide much control, it can at least prevent malicious content from landing on your PC, if not detecting and removing it altogether.
