The PATH environment variable represents a selection of directories that contain executable programs. When a software application is configured in PATH, then it can be easily launched, just like tools that have native support for Windows.
A good example for this is Java Runtime Executable (JRE). Once installed, JRE makes its own configuration in PATH, so that you can run Java-based apps by just double-clicking their files.
addpath is a straightforward command-line utility that can be used to quickly add new entries to the PATH, whether it's before (prepending) or after it (appending). It doesn't require installation and can be seamlessly used.
The program can be stored on a USB flash drive and swiftly launched on any PC where you want to append or prepend new entries to the PATH environment variable. There are distinct executables of addpath for both x86 and x64 Windows, so you have to make sure to use the one that matches your system's architecture type. To avoid any permission-related errors, it's best to run it with elevation rights.
addpath can be called from any command prompt window. If you call the process name without writing any argument, you can check out a popup window that describes the possible commands. The syntax is "addpath pre path" and "addpath post path" for prepending and appending, respectively. No confirmation message is shown at the end of the task. This might make users think that the program doesn't work properly. But it takes the silent approach instead.
Although it hasn't received updates for a while, our tests have shown that addpath works smoothly on Windows 10. It offers a simple solution for adding new paths to the PATH environment variable.
