Ensuring your safety in the digital medium can go beyond employing anti-virus solutions, or addressing the obvious threats that might occur, for instance, when surfing the Web.

Internal and local processes that might be running in the background, while apparently not so important in the safety game, can in fact hide malicious behavior and serve as a bridge for facilitating the infiltration of even more malware. Having the proper means to control such processes is essential, and usually one can rely on the built-in firewall features.

Barikade aims to address such requirements, and it was designed as a dedicated Windows service that will allow you to intercept and control background and foreground processes that might be running outside of permitted directories.

The main working principle of the application involves attempting to close processes and prevent inbound and outbound network connections if a running process is detected as coming from outside of the permitted directories. This will consequently prevent software from bypassing the Windows firewall and downloading potential malware and only allow executables through the AllowedPaths.ini to run and access the network.

Last but not least, the developer advises users not to rely on Barikade as the main protection layer, but instead use it in conjunction with an AV and the Windows firewall.
