What is BMFontGen?

BMFontGen

BMFontGen is a handy command line tool that helps turn TrueType or OpenType fonts into bitmap fonts. So, what's a bitmap font? It's basically a bunch of images along with an XML file that tells you where each letter is located in those images. Plus, it includes some extra data about the font metrics. Bitmap fonts can really come in handy when you're working on game development because sometimes the platform you're using doesn't have its own font renderer.

Understanding Bitmap Fonts

When you use BMFontGen, it aims to support full Unicode characters, which sounds great! But there are a few limitations to keep in mind:

  • Special glyphs like ligatures and non-spacing marks are included, but there isn't special support for them right now.

  • No surrogate characters are supported at this time.

Limitations of BMFontGen

Aside from the Unicode support issues, here are some other things to consider:

  • The only codepage supported is Unicode.

  • The glyphs might not be packed as tightly in the image bitmap as you'd want them to be.

  • If you're using italic fonts, watch out! Sometimes the tops or bottoms can get clipped off.

Your Go-To Tool for Game Development

If you're looking for a way to create bitmap fonts easily, BMFontGen could be your best buddy!
