Even stored on your personal computer files are not completely safe, and this especially includes text documents. Almost every basic text editor is capable of opening TXT files, but if you’re looking for more options, than CryptoTE can help you out by providing a neat edit environment, and different security options.
On the visual side of things the application keeps things simple, with most of the space representing the actual text pad. The upper toolbar is fitted with most common functions you get to use in a session, as well as slots for tabs in case you decide to work on multiple projects at a time.
A default container is created at startup, but you need to save it for all files you edit to remain safe. When doing so a password needs to be provided, which is also the key used to encrypt file content. Luckily, the application comes with a built-in password generator, which allows you to combine different character sets to create powerful security keys.
Multiple users can be created, all work being saved as containers. These can be viewed and handled in a dedicated window, with options to add new, change password, or remove everything.
Unfortunately, the application doesn’t shine so much when it comes to actual text processing. First of all, file support is pretty poor, with the only perfectly readable format being TXT, even though you can open any kind of file. Second, font characteristics can’t be changed whatsoever, but there are options to quickly insert passwords, or timestamps.
Editing options are mostly common ones found in any basic editor, like copy, cut, or paste. You can quickly jump to a line, but there’s no option to enable line numbering on the side. However, you can look for specific text strings, and even replace them with new ones.
Taking everything into consideration, we can say that CryptoTE comes with good intentions, and manages to live up to expectations, at least when it comes to the security of your files. Sadly, text editing operations and file support leave a lot more to be desired.
