Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) is a handy tool when you want to wipe all the data off a storage device. Sure, you can format your drive using Windows, but that doesn't always mean the data is gone for good. With DBAN, you get to boot up into a special environment designed just for erasing data completely from every part of your disk.
Ever thought about recycling an old computer? DBAN comes in super handy here! It lets you create a bootable USB drive that sets up this special environment packed with professional options to sanitize all the hard disks on your system.
This tool wipes out everything without asking for confirmation—no matter where it’s hiding on the disk. It uses some pretty cool algorithms like DoD 5220.22-M, RCMP TSSIT OPS-II, Gutmann, PRNG Stream, or Quick Erase. These standards write over your hard disk multiple times to make sure everything is truly erased.
Some methods take longer than others. For example, the Gutmann method has 35 passes and can take quite a bit of time to finish up!
The best part? You can use DBAN to wipe multiple storage devices at once! According to its developers, it worked like a charm on computers with up to 100 SCSI hard disks—though how fast it works depends on the PCI bus bandwidth.
Now, keep in mind that DBAN might not work on every type of hard drive out there. But once it recognizes the hardware, you're usually good to go! It does come with drivers for most devices, even RAID setups—but you will need to set those RAID volumes up manually.
This program does its job by running wiping routines several times. So don’t be surprised if it takes longer than you'd expect—it could stretch beyond three hours depending on what you're erasing.
I won’t sugarcoat it: DBAN isn’t the most user-friendly option around. You'll need that bootable USB setup first before diving in. But hey, if you're looking for something that really gets your disk pristine clean and ready for new use, it's definitely worth considering!
If you're ready to give it a try and wipe your drives securely, then check out DBAN today!
