The Windows desktop has a standard layout with an invisible grid that holds icons in place. Optionally, you can configure the system not to automatically arrange the icons or align them to the grid but changing the space between icons is another thing. You can make such adjustments in the registry editor, but a much more convenient option is the Desktop Icons Spacing Controller.
This particular application does nothing more than help you modify the icon spacing in Windows 7, 8 and 10. And since its purpose is that simple, its interface is simple as well.
The one-window GUI features just two scroll bars, one for horizontal spacing and the other for vertical spacing. Alternatively, there are two editable fields where you can input the values for vertical and horizontal icon spacing without using the scroll bars.
It only takes clicking on a button to modify the spacing configuration, but note that a system restart is mandatory for the changes to take effect.
If you don't like the outcome and want to go back to the previous spacing settings, you just have to start the application once more and restore the defaults.
Desktop Icons Spacing Controller comes in handy if you want to change the default grid layout on your desktop, but having to restart every time you want to make a change is a bit of an inconvenience.
