Desktop Web Link is a handy tool that helps you create quick access links to your favorite websites, just like regular files on your desktop. You probably already know that you can make shortcuts for basic items on your computer. Browsers let you save bookmarks, but this software takes it a step further!
The cool thing about Desktop Web Link is how simple it is to use. You don’t have to go through a long setup process, which saves you time and effort. Plus, you can keep it on a USB flash drive and use it on both your personal and work computers without messing with the PC’s settings.
The main window of the app is compact and easy to understand. It has a few fields where you can enter the URL of the website you want to link to. Don’t worry; one of those fields isn’t even required! But remember, there’s no clipboard watcher here, so you'll need to copy that web address manually or jot it down.
You also need to pick where you want the shortcut file saved. The browse dialog asks for an existing file, but Windows doesn’t allow blank shortcut files. A neat trick is to type in the name of your new shortcut followed by .html; this way, it opens in your default web browser!
If you want your shortcut to look snazzy, there’s an option to add an icon too! However, keep in mind that this app can't fetch thumbnails from the target website automatically.
You can remove shortcuts easily, but you'll have to fill out those fields again if you're not careful—this could take more time than just hitting “delete” on your keyboard!
In summary, while Desktop Web Link has some good ideas behind it, generating a simple file can feel like a hassle compared to saving directly from your browser. If you're looking for something quick and straightforward, you might find yourself exploring other options after just a few tries.
