DocLock is a super easy-to-use software that helps you keep your private documents, pictures, and other files safe by locking them with a password. Plus, it has a cool feature for permanently deleting data or wiping free space to stop anyone from recovering stuff with special tools like Piriform's Recuva.
Installing DocLock is a breeze! It comes with a clean and simple interface that shows you buttons for locking/unlocking files, managing passwords, and securely deleting data.
You can quickly add files to the task list using drag-and-drop support. You can even lock several items at once with the same password. Want to create your own password? Just type it in and confirm! Or let DocLock make a random secure password for you. If you’re worried about forgetting it, you can save the key as an image file somewhere safe.
Here’s something important: DocLock doesn’t mess with your original files. Instead of overwriting them, it makes new ones with a .doclock extension. This way, your originals stay untouched—just make sure they’re not sitting around where someone else might find them!
The app can also create portable locked files in .exe format. This means you can store these on a USB flash drive for easy access anytime! And if you need to send something over email, it can create zipped archives (ZIP format) too.
To unlock any file, just enter the right password and set where you want to put the original files back.
For extra security, DocLock suggests changing your passwords often. You can do this without unlocking and re-locking everything—just pick one or more files, set the old and new passwords, and confirm!
The shredding process is simple; just choose what items you want to delete permanently and hit the button! You can even wipe free space on any selected drive. However, keep in mind that there’s no option to wipe free space in specific folders, which could take forever on bigger drives.
You’ve got some cool configuration options too! Choose how much compression (fast, normal, best or no compression) you want or pick the encryption security algorithm (like Blowfish or Rijndael). You can also decide if the tool should automatically delete original files after locking them or locked ones after unlocking.
We tested everything out and found that DocLock ran smoothly without crashing or freezing up. It locked and unlocked files quickly while being light on system resources.
In summary, DocLock offers great features for protecting your files with passwords while securely wiping unwanted data. It's user-friendly and fast but hasn’t seen updates for quite some time. Remember though: the demo version only lets you lock Microsoft Word documents.
