The downloaded archive's compression rate is pretty substantial, as the unpacked application type executable is more than four times its size so you can consider portability even on old devices with smaller storage capacity.
At startup, a patch log button lets you know about the changes brought by the last update, in terms of overall functionality, added content like new characters and creatures, game balancing alterations including changing of stats, weapon system and difficulty. There are also two buttons for the official facebook and twitter pages.
You have a choice of five classes to pick from: paladin, vampire, brewer, assassin and alchemist, each with their own abilities, advantages and weaknesses, but not all can be picked from the start, as they unlock at certain level thresholds. Brief descriptions are available, portraying their nature, origin and set of skill they possess.
The soundtrack is unexpectedly good, although repetitive at some point. That can be easily fixed by disabling all sound from the menu within.
Dungelot retains the concept elements of a good roguelike game, character classes, numerous and varied spells, items, soft stats. It is turned based and forces you to put thought in the next moves later on. Character mood also plays an important role as it directly influences the performance on the battlefield. A good mood imbues fighting skills and grants attack bonuses.
Before hurling yourself into the adventure and battles ahead, take a moment to read the brief tutorial presents itself, through tooltips. It conveys the game elements, offering a substantial reward for reading through it all.
You don't see the controlled character , and it kind of reminds of minesweeper. Monsters and creatures are static, they won't chase the character even if discovered, unlike in other roguelike games.
But the most crippling aspect has to be playing the game in fullscreen, option that can be found in the MAC OS X system tray upper bar. It messes up the interface and element alignment over the screen, as well preventing you from reverting to its original window mode. The only workaround consists of “Cmd + alt + esc” key combination, otherwise even upon restart you risk entering the same bug, if the option to open all running applications is activated. This behavior can depend on the compatibility with the OS as well, as newer ones might be prone to it.
Dungelot is not a hardcore representative of the genre. Nevertheless, it's a pleasant experience and application that has the potential to keep you glued to the screen for hours. Even if some technical or design aspects might not reflect a top-notch product, it's still worth taking it into account.
