The desktop is the main working area in Windows, the place where all the files and folders are opened and where all the applications’ windows are displayed.
It usually stores all the shortcuts to frequently used applications or important directories and tools, so keeping things organized on the desktop is essential.
Having that in mind, the developers of Fences created a software tool that can easily organize all the icons on the desktop, allowing you to find anything much easier and faster.
To be more specific, what Fences actually does is create different categories, each storing items previously scattered on the desktop in a cluster that might make it difficult to work with. These categories are much like virtual drawers, each hosting shortcuts to “Programs”, “Folders” and “Files and Documents”.
What is cool about Fences is that it automatically creates these groups and places all the desktop shortcuts in the correct category, depending on its type. In other words, you really don’t have to do anything else but install Fences and all your desktop icons will be neatly organized.
Even if a shortcut has been placed in a category as Fences did its magic, you can still move it from one area to another or restore it on the original desktop, outside Fences. Removing a fence is possible by hitting the “X” in the corner and, in this case, its contents are immediately restored to the desktop.
Each “fence” created by Fences is a shaded area on the desktop and all are movable and resizable, giving you the freedom to control how the desktop area looks like. Fences goes even further with the customization and allows you to change a window’s opacity and color and roll it up to free up the desktop even more.
The Chameleon feature in Fences makes it possible to blend all the icons and the fence into the wallpaper, making them almost transparent. This might make your working area seem clutter-free even more.
Items inside a fence can be easily sorted alphabetically or by various other criteria, such as size, item type, modification and creation date, number of times opened, and more. Advanced sorting rules are available, you just have to take the time to configure and manage them. Fences can automatically send a certain file type to a fence, while also allowing you to configure name, time, or target-based rules.
There are various other features in Fences that you would surely enjoy, such as the so-called “Folder Portals”, the “peek” function to bring all the Fence groups to the top quicker, or “Vanish”, which can quickly hide and show all the icons on the desktop by simply double-clicking any blank area.
Fences is a great solution for a crowded desktop. There is more to catch your attention, so I encourage you to discover it on your own by hitting that download button.
