Antivirus and protection solutions have come a long, long way since the old days, and continue to get even better with each passing year. Be that as it may, the old-school methods of security (hiding folders, password-protecting files, and so forth) are still very much important, especially when used in combination with other modern solutions.
As most of you out there know, Windows is not particularly well versed when it comes to allowing its users to lock and password-protect folders, files, drives, and external storage components. To this day, the answer is almost always going for a third-party app to get these types of things done.
Meet FileNurse, a small, lightweight, yet very efficient utility that allows you to password-protect folders and files, as well as hide drives and folders. The app can be deployed on any computer running anything above Windows XP, and all that’s required is the presence of .NET Framework 4.0 or newer.
Its kit is neatly organized in 4 main, self-explanatory sections easily accessible from the left side of the main window namely Drive, Lock Folder, Hide/Show, and Options. You are provided with the option of hiding individual drives or all of them with no more than a few mouse clicks.
The Lock Folder feature is just as intuitive, as you only have to select the folder in question, and lock or unlock it using the designated controls. It’s almost the same with the Hide/Show feature: simply use the File Explorer and select the specific file/files you want to hide or show. The Options menu is quite simplistic and it provides you with the options of clearing the log history sections. You can choose to clear the drive logs, the lock folder logs, or the hide file logs.
Interestingly enough, the app is designed to also help you recover lost or deleted files not only from your PC, but from external sources as well. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to make the feature work as intended, as the app refused to open the so-called File Recovery Tool.
FileNurse is a useful utility that should help you add an important layer of security by allowing you to password-protect files and folders, as well as hide folders and drives.
