Customizing the appearance of folder icons is a feature that many avid PC users might require, since it enables them to personalize their folder directory even more. There are many applications that allow such adjustments to be made and one of them is FolderIcons. This utility is meant to help people change the icons of their favorite folders, by using its predefined library of colorful icons.
FolderIcons provides people with a “no-brainer” interface that incorporates the Windows folder structure inside it, making directory navigation easy. One will be able to browse to the preferred folder in not time, but unfortunately, the application doesn’t support manual entry of directory addresses as text strings.
Next to the resizable folder tree navigator, the predefined icon set is displayed and by just selecting a folder from the list plus a preferred icon, one is able to prepare the new icon. Clicking on the large, icon assign button or pressing the “F6” key will instantly set the preferred icon to the selected folder.
People can integrate the application with the Windows context menu (“Send To”) and this enables them to access the folder customization from any disk location. However, although it features an intuitive handling, the application comes with a very shallow documentation that might not help novice users too much.
Experienced users could sense that the application’s predefined icon library is quite limited and they might need to seek additional icon sets for their requirements. People who are used with the latest versions of Windows might not be able to appreciate the features of FolderIcons, since it will only run on Windows XP.
Clearly, FolderIcons will be appreciated for being lightweight and straightforward in use. It will allow one to easily navigate to the required folders and assign new icons to them. Nevertheless, due to its restrictive predefined icon library, users will need to look for additional icon sets and use those instead.
