Finding out information about a particular IP address and its associated geolocation can be done using the multitude of online services that provide such functionality. However, if you prefer a dedicated, desktop solution, GeolocationWebService can provide that for you.
Relying on freely available data sources, this web service will require users to resort to an offline database for performing the queries. This procedure is explained in more detail on the developer’s page, here. Support for both the IPv4 and IPv6 protocols is provided and depending on which one users choose, downloading the corresponding CSV file from the location database will be required.
For easier understanding, a web interface, containing examples, can be initialized from the dedicated command in the service manager. Users must note that running the service will require at least 2 GB of free disk space and that in order to achieve a better implementation to any proprietary apps, the JSON endpoint is recommended.
In order to retrieve a graphical representation of a map containing the identified geolocation, users can resort to the map endpoint. Last but not least, the zooming feature will be based on processing single requests at a time, in order to reduce excessive resource consumption.
