Git Extensions is a super handy toolkit for software developers who want to work with the Git platform in a simpler way. It offers a friendly interface and easy management features. Plus, it supports integration with Windows Explorer and has plugins for Visual Studio!
You can grab one of three different versions. The full version includes everything you need to run Git Extensions, like Git for Windows (the native version of Git) and KDiff, which is a diff/merge tool that helps when you hit merge conflicts.
You can choose to skip installing any of these components if you want. There are also options for additional tools like plugins, custom merge scripts, spelling dictionaries, translations, Windows Explorer integration, and Visual Studio extensions. You even get to pick your SSH client: OpenSSH (the default for Git) or PuTTY (which works better with Windows).
If you're looking for something lighter, there’s a minimal edition without Git and Kdiff. There's also a mono version that doesn’t need installation; it works on Mac OS X and Linux too!
The main app window is super intuitive! You can easily create, open, and clone repositories—including SVN and Github forks. When it comes to tools, you have access to Git bash, Git GUI, GitK, PuTTY, plus you can view commits by user and check out Git command logs.
The toolkit has plugins that help automate tasks like compiling SubModules automatically or fetching updates in the background. You can create local tracking branches as well as delete old ones. It also helps locate large files and switch proxies easily!
You have tons of options when it comes to customizing your settings in Git Extensions—everything from fonts and colors to SSH scripts and hotkeys.
During our tests on Windows 10, the toolkit worked really well! It didn’t slow down the computer at all. We didn’t run into any stability issues either. Plus, there's user documentation available on the developer's website if you need help.
If you're looking for an approachable interface packed with features for managing your Git repositories effectively, then Git Extensions is definitely worth checking out!
