Git Town

If you're an advanced Git users, then your "workflow" mainly revolves around command-line sessions, we're sure. That said, if you've been using Git for a long time, then it's well worth assuming that you know just how "repetitive" Git can be when it comes to generic operations.

Enter Git Town, an uber-useful, open-source plugin for Git that brings forth an interesting set of commands and features aimed at improving the whole process of collaborative software development by helping you automate various operations.

As you can imagine, before you can actually use it, you first need to make sure that Git is installed on your computer. Subsequently, you can just fire it up using a typical Command Prompt session with full administrative rights.

It basically adds various Git commands that support all the typical Git-related workflow elements like GitHub Flow, Git Flow, the Nvie model, GitLab Flow. The provided Git commands can be integrated into two main categories: some more suited for development workflow while others for repository maintenance.

In the first category, we can find commands like git town hack (which cuts a new up-to-date feature branch off the main one), git town sync (which updates the current branch with all ongoing changes), git town new-pull-request (create a new pull request), and git town ship (delivers a completed feature branch and removes it).

In the second one, we can find commands such as Git town kill (removes a feature branch), git town prune branches (deletes all merged branches), git town rename-branch (renames a branch), git town append (insert a new branch as a child of the current branch), git town prepend (inserts a new branch between the current one and the parent one) and git town repo (view the repository page).

Taking everything into account, Git Town is a useful Git plugin that's well worth having around while using Git, especially when it comes to situations where collaboration is key.
