Google Drive, which is also known as Drive for desktop, is the latest version of Google’s backup and sync tools. If you were using the old Backup and Sync, you might have noticed some notifications popping up about moving to this new version. Just a heads-up: Backup and Sync stopped working on October 1st, 2021.
When it comes to backing up your data, it’s super important to choose the right software. There are tons out there, but Google Drive really stands out. It combines features from both Google File Stream (made for business users) and Backup and Sync into one neat package.
With Google Drive, you get the best bits from those two older apps, making it easier to manage your files. Whether you’re using a free account or have a Google One subscription, logging in is simple and straightforward.
Once you install the desktop client, it creates a new drive on your computer where you can keep files that need syncing. Unlike Backup and Sync, this new version lets you work with files in shared drives too! You can even choose specific files to sync instead of just whole folders.
A cool feature of Google Drive is that it integrates nicely with Microsoft Outlook and Office. This means if you’re working on documents or emails, everything updates in real time!
If you're new to this software, don’t worry! There’s a handy “Get Started with Drive for desktop” tour that walks you through everything. You can upload all kinds of media files or just use Google Photos for pictures and videos.
One big bonus of using cloud storage like Google Drive is freeing up space on your computer while still having access to everything online whenever you need it. Plus, if you have multiple Google accounts, accessing your files is super easy without switching back and forth!
By default, Google Drive streams your files from the cloud only. But if you want certain files available offline? No problem! You can easily set things up so they sync directly onto your PC as well.
Your synced files are automatically updated across all devices when shared via the cloud—meaning you'll always have the most recent versions at hand!
The way Drive works remains familiar; accessing it from the tray area is still just one click away! But look out for some visible changes designed by Google's developers to make things even better for users like us!
