What is HardLinker?

HardLinker

HardLinker is a cool tool that helps you create hardlinks easily on your Windows 2000 and NT4 systems. So, what's a hardlink? Think of it as a way to have one file show up in multiple places without actually making copies of it. When you set up a hardlink, the original file and the hardlink share all the same info, like file attributes and content. The best part? It doesn't use extra space on your disk!

Why Use HardLinks?

If you need to access a specific file from different spots on your computer, hardlinks are your best friend. Instead of duplicating files everywhere (which eats up space), you can just create hardlinks instead! For example, if you have an include file that every project needs, just make a hardlink to the original. Whenever you update one link, all the others change too. It's super efficient!

How HardLinks Work

The file system tracks how many hardlinks point to each file with something called a reference counter. This means that the actual file only gets deleted when the last hardlink pointing to it is removed. So rest easy knowing your data stays safe until you're ready to let go.

Requirements for HardLinker

To use HardLinker, here's what you need:

  • Create hard links easily

  • Integrated into Explorer (Shell extension)

Limitations You Should Know About

Here are some limitations:

  • You can only create hardlinks for files (not directories).

  • Your partition type has to be NTFS.

  • You can only create hardlinks within the same partition; they can't link across different ones.
